Abstract

Social work is a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. It aims to help people develop their skills and their ability to use their own resources and those of the community to resolve problems. It can also be seen as a subset of work-integrated learning. The purpose of social work learning is to help the community while also helping students to gain professional skills that they might need in the future.

The present paper summarizes this research, and presents interventions based on the findings that have the potential to improve student outcomes through problem-based learning with a NGO’s or non-profit organizations. The case describes the content and implementation of community service for the students in a business school in Mumbai. A content analysis was undertaken of the students’ reflective reports in order to determine the skills that the students recorded that they have developed through their experience. The findings provide insight into the perceptions of students regarding their community engagement experience and how this experience helps in enriching students’ skill base. Overall, the community service was a positive experience for business students, increasing their confidence and their ability to work with others.
