Abstract

The study attempts to explore some of the key differences that are arising in-between the two main sectors in the economy and bring out some of the characteristics of the recent trending informal economy. To some extent the paper seeks to perceive whether there is any link(s) between the formal sector and the informal sector. The issue is significant particularly due to the mounting presence of the informal economy in the developing nations that it diverts academic attention to it and seeks an in-depth analysis. To reveal this, the present study is confined to Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road under Kamarhati Municipality in Belgharia under North 24 Paraganas in West Bengal. The selection of the sample region is on a purposive basis and the sample units at random. The logical argumentation of the study is mainly based on literature support and primary survey results performed in accordance to the standard model approach—the survey results have been analyzed using appropriate bars and pie charts followed by some medians, quartiles and modes. Our study reveals that primary educated female work participation is higher in the informal sector. This male-female work participatory diversity is also present in the formal sector but to a lesser extent. The male-female modal income of the two sectors is more dispersed in the informal sector than the formal one.
