The Role of Digital Transformation in Economics Growth: An Indian Perspective
Abstract
India's economy has benefited greatly from digital transformation, which has transformed important industries like entrepreneurship, banking, governance, and education. The rapid adoption of digital technologies, fuelled by initiatives like Digital India, Aadhaar, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and Bharat Net, have enhanced financial inclusion, improved public service delivery, and generated new employment opportunities. Government-led efforts in e-governance and fintech have facilitated economic participation, minimized leakages in welfare schemes, and promoted transparency. However, challenges persist India continues to grapple with the digital divide, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and automation-induced job displacement. While digital payment systems and Aadhaar-linked services have improved financial accessibility, gaps remain in digital literacy, credit availability for small businesses, and equitable financial participation. This paper explores these aspects through the perspectives of leading Indian economists such as Amartya Sen, Raghuram Rajan, Arvind Subramanian, and Nandan Nilekani. By examining the implementation of digital financial inclusion and its impact on India's economic trajectory, this study highlights how digitalization fosters GDP growth, job creation, and business efficiency. The paper also proposes policy measures to ensure inclusive, secure, and sustainable digital growth. For India to improve its economic resilience and solidify its place in the global digital economy, it will be essential to address important issues and take advantage of new developments.
