Abstract

Inflation is a critical economic phenomenon that influences consumer spending behaviors, with significant implications for policymakers, businesses, and consumers alike. This research investigates the effects of inflation on consumer spending patterns, focusing on how different demographic groups adjust their consumption decisions in response to rising prices. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative analysis of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) with qualitative insights gathered from surveys and interviews. Central to this inquiry are questions concerning spending prioritization between essential and discretionary items, coping strategies adopted by consumers, and the demographic variances in these behaviors. The findings reveal that inflation prompts consumers to prioritize essential goods, with lower-income households experiencing more pronounced adverse effects. Additionally, coping mechanisms such as seeking discounts and altering purchasing patterns emerge as common strategies among consumers. The research underscores the importance of financial literacy and targeted policy interventions to support vulnerable populations and stabilize consumer confidence in the face of ongoing inflationary pressures
