A Comparative Analysis of Performance Metrics of India’s Top 5 Public and Private Banks
Abstract
The financial performance of banks is a vital indicator of a country’s economic stability and progress. In India’s rapidly evolving and competitive banking landscape, understanding financial trends and outcomes is essential for evaluating institutional resilience and sector-wide health. This analysis focuses on the financial efficiency of five prominent Indian banks for the period of 2019-2024. Using a descriptive research design, the study assesses key financial ratios including profitability, liquidity, and solvency to draw comparisons between public and private sector banks. Secondary data has been sourced from audited financial statements, investor presentations, and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) publications. The analysis reveals that private sector banks, particularly HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, have consistently outperformed their public counterparts in profitability. ICICI Bank has shown notable year-on-year improvement, while SBI has demonstrated steady performance despite systemic and structural challenges. The findings highlight that strategic financial management, strong regulatory compliance, and digital innovation are critical to achieving sustained financial growth. This study offers meaningful insights for investors, financial analysts, and policymakers by shedding light on the underlying institutional strengths and evolving sectoral trends within India’s banking landscape. Through a comprehensive evaluation of key performance indicators, the research highlights the critical importance of adopting adaptive strategies and implementing sound financial practices. These measures are essential to fostering resilience, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring the long-term stability and competitiveness of the Indian banking sector.
