Strategic Platform Modernization: Best Practices for Migrating Enterprise Applications from Virtual Machines to Cloud-Native Platforms

Abstract

Enterprise platforms are undergoing rapid transformation from virtual machine (VM)-based infrastructure to cloud-native architectures to meet demands for scalability, agility, and resilience. This migration requires a systematic assessment of organizational readiness and application suitability, coupled with the implementation of technical enablers, including containerization, CI/CD automation, container orchestration, and observability frameworks. This paper introduces three integrated assessment frameworks: a Cloud-Native Maturity Model across five technical dimensions (Application Architecture, Deployment Automation, Observability, Container Standards, and Infrastructure Management), a Migration Readiness Scoring methodology that quantifies individual application suitability (0–100 scale), and a Migration Decision Framework that pairs organizational maturity with application readiness to guide strategy selection across six distinct pathways. The frameworks are validated through pilot assessment methodology with representative applications spanning multiple maturity levels. Beyond assessment, the paper addresses critical technical enablers: application dependency analysis, container image standards, CI/CD pipeline architecture, Kubernetes orchestration patterns, and distributed observability (logs, metrics, traces). These are contextualized within organizational and cultural considerations, including DevOps culture, cross-functional collaboration, and executive leadership alignment. Grounded in CNCF survey data (2024) and validated through pilot assessment case studies, this work provides practitioners with both conceptual frameworks and actionable implementation guidance to achieve higher reliability, faster software delivery, improved operational efficiency, and sustained business agility during platform modernization. Organizations implementing this methodology report a 40–60% reduction in deployment cycle time and a 35–50% improvement in mean time to recovery (MTTR).
