Abstract

What sticks around online when someone dies - things like email, profiles, stored files, or digital names - makes up what people call a digital afterlife. Long trails left behind in apps and platforms grow wider every year, making it more urgent to handle such information with care, respect choices made while alive, and avoid confusion later on. Problems pop up not just in how systems store or delete data but also in laws that lag behind and moral questions about who should control access afterward. Looking into existing rules, real-life examples, earlier findings, alongside checks on policies helps uncover both patterns and weak spots now present across handling these remains. One idea stands out early: handling old data needs clear steps. A system could label information, check permissions, plan removal times, then erase or store it automatically - machines help make this smooth. Some sites already try similar methods, though their rules often clash or fall short. Looking closer shows gaps between theory and real practice. Ethics come into play when deciding what stays versus vanishes online. Each choice carries trade-offs, some unseen at first glance. New tech like artificial intelligence or shared ledgers might shape tomorrow's solutions. Global agreement remains distant but necessary. Clarity, fairness, and consistency matter most moving forward. How people want their digital traces handled cannot be ignored. Rules must reflect actual human values, not just technical convenience.
