Leveraging Indigenous Knowledge for Sustainable Business Models: A Study on Tribal Entrepreneurship and Commercial Innovation in Gudalur Taluk

Abstract

Indigenous knowledge has long been a foundation for sustainable business practices, particularly among tribal entrepreneurs in Gudalur Taluk. This study examines the role of traditional wisdom in shaping entrepreneurial ventures, fostering innovation, and ensuring economic sustainability. Through a survey of 300 tribal entrepreneurs, the research explores how indigenous knowledge influences business operations, competitive advantages, and resource utilization while assessing the effectiveness of government policies and skill development programs. Findings reveal that a significant majority of respondents recognize the importance of traditional knowledge in business, with many integrating sustainable practices into their operations. However, challenges persist in areas such as access to financial support, innovation incentives, and adequate training programs. While tribal entrepreneurship contributes significantly to local economic development, gaps remain in policy implementation and infrastructure support. This study highlights the need for targeted interventions to strengthen indigenous entrepreneurial ecosystems. Recommendations include enhancing government support, fostering collaborations between tribal businesses and mainstream markets, and promoting education programs that balance traditional and modern business strategies. By leveraging indigenous knowledge as a driver of sustainable entrepreneurship, Gudalur Taluk can build a resilient, inclusive, and economically thriving tribal business landscape.
