Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is fundamentally altering information systems worldwide, has a lot to offer academic libraries. In response to growing digital collections and user expectations, Indian academic libraries have been looking into AI-enabled services including intelligent cataloguing, chatbots, RFID-based tracking, and analytics-driven collection building. However, a number of obstacles technical, financial, legal, ethical, social, and operational restrict adoption. In addition to identifying important gaps in Indian LIS research and offering a methodical, workable framework for the responsible deployment of AI in academic libraries, this paper provides a thorough, literature- based analysis of these obstacles and ethical issues. In order to secure user privacy, ensure equity, and maintain library responsibilities in higher education, the paper synthesizes results from previous scholarship and ends with prioritized suggestions for institutions looking to deploy AI.
