Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly evolved into a key enabling technology for smart environments by interconnecting heterogeneous devices capable of sensing, processing, and exchanging data. However, the large-scale deployment of IoT systems introduces critical challenges related to security, privacy, data integrity, trust, and scalability. Blockchain technology, with its decentralized and immutable ledger mechanism, has emerged as a promising approach to address these challenges by eliminating single points of failure and enhancing transparency and trust. This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the convergence between IoT and blockchain technologies, focusing on current advancements, research challenges, and future emerging applications. The study systematically reviews recent IoT–blockchain integration architectures, consensus mechanisms, smart contract frameworks, and lightweight blockchain solutions designed for resource-constrained IoT devices. Key technical challenges, including latency, energy consumption, storage overhead, interoperability, and regulatory compliance, are critically analyzed to identify existing research gaps. Furthermore, the paper highlights emerging application domains such as smart cities, healthcare monitoring, industrial IoT, supply chain management, intelligent transportation systems, and energy management, where blockchain- enabled IoT solutions have demonstrated enhanced security, traceability, and operational efficiency. Finally, the paper discusses future research directions aimed at improving scalability and performance through edge and fog computing integration, artificial intelligence–driven optimization, and standardization of IoT–blockchain frameworks. This comprehensive review provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners seeking to design secure, scalable, and trustworthy next-generation IoT systems leveraging blockchain technology.
